Welcome to a ten-step drawing tutorial on how to draw a football!
If you are in the United States, you may call this a soccer ball. However, for the rest of the world, it is football! Have you ever played football? It is a very fun game played with two teams. Whoever scores the most goals wins!
Football is an extremely popular sport that dates back to the late 1800s. Nowadays, a standard match lasts 90 minutes with a 15-minute half-time break. The game has many rules, but you can easily play it in your backyard as long as you have some people and a football! Football’s accessibility is why it is so popular worldwide among all walks of life.
Some of the most famous football players are Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo. They are so famous that most people know them outside of the football world, too! Do you know any famous football players?

How to Draw a Football — Let’s get started!
Step 1 – Draw a circle.
Footballs are round. A standard ball is 70 centimeters in diameter, but this can vary depending on the level of play.
For your football, simply draw a circle in the middle of the page. Make it as perfect of a circle as you can! Great job.
Step 2 – Start the pattern.
If you’ve ever seen a football, you probably know its iconic pattern of geometric shapes. This is the traditional design, but not all footballs have it today.
Ours will have this famous pattern! Draw a pentagon (a shape with five sides) in the middle of the circle to begin.
Step 3 – Continue the pattern.
Let’s continue making the pattern. At each point of the pentagon you just drew, add a small line extending out towards the edge of the circle. They should not quite reach the edge.
Step 4 – Keep adding to the pattern.
Let’s keep adding to the shapes inside the football. At the end of each line you added in Step 3, add two more lines extending out. You should have 5 wide V shapes extending near the end of the ball. Refer to the photo for help.
Good job! We’re making progress!
Step 5 – Keep adding to the pattern.
Again, let’s add to the geometric pattern. Add straight lines that connect all the gaps formed in the pattern.
Step 6 – Finish the pattern.
Finally, in this step, we will finish the pattern. Add 10 more lines that bring the pattern to the very edge of the ball. This should make it look more like a sphere popping off the page! Refer to the photo.
Step 7 – Add the field in the background.
Soccer is played on a field, also called a pitch. A regulation field can be around 110 meters long, although this can vary slightly. The field is quite big, and the players must be in really good shape for the whole game!
We want to draw a field in our picture. It will look like we are viewing it from above, as if from a plane. Draw a rectangle around the ball. It should be centered in the page and wider than it is tall. Additionally, draw a line halfway down the rectangle (this part of the field is called the midfield). It should appear to be behind the ball.
Step 8 – Add the goal areas.
To score a goal, players must go to the end of the field and score within the goalposts that are gauded by a goalie.
Let’s add the goal area now. On both ends of the field, draw a rectangle. Add a smaller rectangle inside. These indicate the different markings on the field. Great job!
Step 9 – Add more field markings.
We’re nearly done! Let’s add a few more field markings. These help the players and the refs execute the game properly. Draw a semicircle at the edge of the goal areas. Next, draw small triangles in the corners. These are where flags go and where corner kicks are played.
Awesome!
Step 10 – Color in your football!
Traditional footballs are black and white, but they can really be any color! Find your favorite colors and have fun. Color in the field, as well. Most of the time, they are green, but there is no limit to art!
