You’ve surely seen a castle somewhere….maybe even in person! They are all over Europe as well as other continents. They can look quite different, but most castles are big powerful structures. Some famous ones are the Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, and even Cinderella’s castle in Disney World! Of course, there are so many more.

Perhaps you’ve even seen some of these or even made your own out of sand or building blocks. Have you ever been to the beach where people made sandcastles along the shore? There are also a ton of castles in popular movies and books.

Before we get started, let’s learn a few things about castles. First off, the main quality of castles is that they are designed to defend territory. Many of them have tall walls and are surrounded by water to thwart attacks! They often had beautiful gardens and houses tons of people, including knights, nobles, servants, cooks, and more. Many castles even have hidden rooms!

Anyways, enough talking—find your art materials, and let’s begin with this tutorial. Keep reading for Step 1! We will learn more as we go along.

How to Draw a Castle — Let’s get started!

Step 1 – Draw the front entryway.

How to Draw a Castle - Step 1 – Draw the front entryway.

Castles are big, strong structures. Let’s begin building ours with the entryway. Draw a square that is about ⅓ the height of the page. Top it with a long skinny rectangle. Check out the photo.

Step 2 – Make the castle taller!

As we said, castles are meant to protect! That means they have tall strong walls. We need to make our castle taller. Draw two parallel lines that form a skinnier rectangle on top of the one we drew in Step 1.

Additionally, add a horizontal line to form the base of the castle.

Step 3 – Add two more towers.

Often, castles have several different towers connected by walls. Ours will have multiple towers. Draw two more parallel lines a few inches out from the center tower. They should be a bit shorter. Refer to the photo.

Step 4 – Add the tops of the towers!

Towers are important to the function of a castle because they help watchmen look out for people approaching the territory. In this step, our castle will start to become recognizable. That’s because we are adding the tops of the towers!

Draw a large triangle in the center. The point should be going upwards. On each of the smaller towers, add a small triangle.

Good job!

Step 5 – Add more detail to the towers!

Let’s add more defining features. In each triangle, add a line that runs parallel to the base. Look at the photo. These make the towers look like they have roofs.

Additionally, add horizontal lines at the bottom of the outside towers to form the base of the structure. Awesome job!

Step 6 – Add a door!

Let’s add more to the entryway. We need a door! Draw a semi-circle for the door. Divide it in half with a vertical line so that you have two doors. Lastly, add two little doorknobs.

Step 7 –  Start drawing the windows.

Our castle needs to have windows. Inside each tower, draw a skinny horizontal rectangle. The one in the middle should be a little longer since it will be the biggest window. We will finish the windows in the next step.

Step 8 – Add detail to the windows.

Above each windowsill, add a semicircle for the actual window panes. Again, make the one in the middle the biggest. Now our castle has windows!

Step 9 – Draw hearts on top of the towers.

We’re almost done! We need to add more decoration to our castle.

At the top of each castle, draw a heart!

Step 10 –  Color in your drawing!

This is the best step. We need to color in our castle! Maybe you want to make yours look like a famous castle you know, or maybe you want to be totally original! Either way, have fun with it.
