Welcome to our fun tutorial on how to draw a dachshund! Dachshunds are a breed of dog that originates from Germany. There are two kinds of dachshunds: standard and miniature, and they are all adorable.
Dachshunds were bred to be hunters. They also love to dig. One fun fact about dachshunds is that they were the first Olympic mascot ever! Dachshunds are typically pretty small, but they have a personality much bigger than their size. Lastly, they are known to be one of the longest-living dog breeds.
Let’s get started on this drawing tutorial. Along the way, there will be pictures for you to follow along as well as some more fun facts about this cute dog. Keep reading to begin!

How to Draw a Dachshund — Let’s get started!
Step 1 – Draw the top of the dog’s head.
We’re going to start with the dachshund’s head. In the top-left quadrant of the page, draw a line that curves up in the middle. Check out the photo.
Step 2 – Draw the dachshund’s nose!
Let’s add the nose. Dachshunds have great senses of smell since they are hunting dogs. Simply draw a small circle at the left end of the curve from Step 1. Our dog, as you can tell, will be facing to the left.
Step 3 – Draw the dog’s snout.
Let’s continue drawing the head. In this step, we are going to finish drawing the snout and mouth. Underneath the nose, draw a short curved line. It should look like a smile! Refer to the photo.
Step 4 – Finish the shape of the head.
Let’s add more to the head. Next to the line you just drew in Step 3, draw a long line that curves down the page. This is the rest of the mouth and the front leg. Check out the photo for reference.
Good job!
Step 5 – Add the dachshund’s eyes and ear!
Dachshunds have amazing hearing—in fact, it’s about four times as good as a human’s! To draw the ear, form a large U shape in the head. Next to the ear, draw a small dot for the eye. Since we are drawing the dog from a profile view, we can only see one ear and one eye.
Step 6 – Draw the shape of the body.
Let’s add more of the dog’s outline. Draw a long line extending down from the head. Make it continue for a few inches. This is the back. Next, make that line curve downward for the back leg. Refer to the photo!
Step 7 – Draw the dachshund’s belly and legs.
Let’s add the legs! Dachshunds are famously short (they are also called weiner dogs, after all) and in this step, you’ll see why. Draw the front paw at the end of the line from Step 5. Continue the line for the belly. Add another hind leg and paw in the back by drawing a curved line. Definitely check out the photo for this step! Great job.
Step 8 – Add the dachshund’s legs.
We need to add two more legs. Again, since we are drawing its profile, we can just barely see the other two legs. Draw a short line next to the front and back legs. These are the other two legs.
Step 9 – Add the tail of the dachshund!
All dogs have tails! Dogs wag their tails for a variety of reasons, such as to express excitement. We need to add one to our dachshund now.
Good job! You’re almost done with this tutorial.
Step 10 – Color in your dachshund!
This is the most fun step! Find some colored pencils or markers and color in your dachshund however you want. Fill in the rest of the page, too, and have fun with it. Give our new dog a name, too!
Pin it now, Draw later!
