Hello, and welcome to another tutorial by Emily Drawing! Today’s tutorial is all about drawing the ferret! We’ll go through nine easy steps to draw this cute little animal.

There are two types of ferrets: the domestic and black-footed ferret. Domestic ferrets are usually kept as pets, while black-footed ferrets are usually found in the wild or captivity.

The domestic ferret is about 20 inches long, and this includes their 5-inch tail. They weigh about 1 to 4 pounds. When first born, domestic ferrets are about 2 to 2.5 inches long and 6 to 14 grams.

The black-footed ferret is about 18 to 24 inches long and weighs about 1.5 to 2.5 pounds. They’re about the size of a pinky finger at birth and weigh about 0.2 to 0.3 ounces.

In both species, male ferrets are usually larger than female ferrets. While ferrets are considered adults when they’re one year old, they reach their full size when they’re about 5 to 6 months old.

It’s time to get started on the tutorial for drawing a ferret. Grab your colored pencils or markers, and learn how to draw this amazing mammal.

How to Draw a Ferret — Let’s get started!

Step 1 – Draw The Ferret’s Head

How to Draw a Ferret - Step 1 – Draw The Ferret’s Head

Start by drawing the ferret’s head. The head is a round shape, sort of an oval, and it’s one of the easiest steps of the tutorial. A male ferret has a rounded head, while a female ferret has a more narrow head.

Step 2 – Draw The Ferret’s First Front Leg

The next step is to draw the ferret’s chest and first front leg. You’ll start at the head, moving to the paw and up the back of the leg. The line for the leg should end halfway up the ferret’s body.

Step 3 – Draw The Ferret’s Second Front Leg

Now, you’ll draw the ferret’s second front leg. This leg is somewhat hidden behind the first front leg and chest, you only need to draw the bottom portion and paw. Fun fact: Ferrets have short legs with large paws and claws for digging.

Step 4 – Draw The Ferret’s Belly and First Hind Leg

Next, you’ll draw the belly, which is a nearly straight line. This is followed by the ferret’s first hind leg. Just like the first front leg, the second line for the leg should only come halfway up the body. Did you know that black-footed ferrets can move at speeds of 5 to 7 mph? They’ll also travel up to 11 miles to find food.

Step 5 – Draw The Ferret’s Backside

When you draw the ferret’s backside, you’re going to start with the tail. Then, you’ll move to the back and neck, which slightly curves upward and then back down. Connect the neck to the head to close up the space on the ferret’s body.

Step 6 – Draw The Ferret’s Ears

Drawing the ferret’s ears is pretty easy. You’re simply drawing two round shapes, each attached to one side of the top of the ferret’s head. Add a smaller curved line inside each ear, so you can pinpoint the inner and outer ears. While black-footed ferrets have larger ears than domestic ferrets, both species have a hearing range of 40 Hz to over 30 kHz, which is similar to humans.

Step 7 – Draw The Ferret’s Face

It’s always fun to add the face, and this adorable animal is no exception. You can add two dots for the eyes and an upside-down rounded triangle for the nose. Like many animal tutorials, you’ll start at the nose and add two curved lines for the smile.

Step 8 – Draw The Ferret’s Whiskers

Finally, you’ll add two whiskers to each side of the ferret’s face. The whiskers are used for navigation and communication, but they’re also sensitive to touch because of the blood vessels and nerves.

Step 9 – Color In Your Drawing!

Now, here comes the step you may have been waiting for: coloring in your ferret! Our ferret is a tannish shade with lighter ears, which you can color in white, light tan, or even off-white. The rest of the details, such as the face, are black. Be sure to color the background to reflect your ferret’s environment, from a playful enclosure to a beautiful grassland. We want you to have fun with your tutorial and coloring.

Interesting Facts About The Ferret

Black-footed ferrets prefer open prairies and grasslands and use burrows as shelter, while wild domestic ferrets live in semi or fully forest areas, such as woods, near water sources. When kept as pets, domestic ferrets need a well-ventilated enclosure in a draft-free environment that’s no warmer than 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Domestic ferrets are social creatures and are usually adopted in pairs. They thrive on playtime and interaction, and they can form bonds with their owners. Meanwhile, black-footed ferrets prefer more solitude outside of mating season and caring for their young.

Did You Know?

  • Domestic ferrets require animal protein, so they can be fed ferret kibble supplemented with cooked lean meat like turkey or chicken. Black-footed ferrets mostly eat prairie dogs, but they also eat mice, rabbits, and squirrels.
  • Both ferret species are known for their high intelligence, as well as their curiosity, playfulness, and being alert.
  • Domesticated ferrets sleep 12 to 20 hours a day, depending on the season and their age, while black-footed ferrets sleep for up to 21 hours a day.
  • The average lifespan of a domestic ferret is 5 to 10 years. Some can live longer, with the oldest known domestic ferret being 14 years old. Black-footed ferrets live 1 to 3 years in the wild and 4 to 6 or even 12 years old in captivity.
