How to Draw a Gorilla — Let’s get started!
Step 1 – Sketch Gorilla’s Head
The first step of this drawing is sketching a gorilla’s head. Our whole drawing is based on it, so be cautious.
Now, put your pencil in the upper center of the page. Draw a medium size oval shape. The oval should be flattened from the top and bottom.
With this, make sure the upper portion is slightly narrower than the bottom one. It will give a realistic look to our gorilla’s head.
Lastly, sketch some curve shapes on either side of the oval shape as shown in our picture. These curved shapes will represent the fur of the gorilla’s face.
Step 2 – Draw the Powerful Body of Gorilla (Part 1)
Gorillas are famous for their powerful bodies and muscles. So, you should spend some time drawing it. That’s why, I have divided it into two parts.
In this first part, you should sketch a slightly curved line, starting from the front bottom of the head.
Now, draw a few curved lines as shown in our reference picture. These lines will make the shape of the shoulders and the belly of the gorilla.
Step 3 – Draw the Powerful Body of Gorilla (Part 2)
Finally, it is time to complete the body of the gorilla.
For this, add a small curved shape starting from the leg of the gorilla. On the curve, just with the first outline of the leg, draw a small line. Moreover, draw another curved line at the end of the curve shape as shown in our reference picture.
Now, it is time to create the front of the body. To do this, put your pencil on the center left of the gorilla’s head. Here, draw a curved shape with stumps. Afterward, extend it downwards in a straight line to make the last line of the leg.
Step 4 – Create the Knuckles of the Gorilla’s Front Legs
Gorillas walk on their knuckles, so we need to sketch them for a realistic gorilla drawing. To do this, draw small rounded shapes at the end of the front leg lines, as shown in our reference picture.
In these rounded shapes, draw an arc shape to distinguish the toes from the knuckles.
Step 5 – Sketch the Knuckles of Hinder Legs
It is time to complete the hind legs of the gorilla. To do this, draw paw shapes at their bottom.
You have to draw the small curve shape, linking both lines of the hind leg. In the end, draw another small shape with it, linking with the small curve line as shown in our picture.
It will represent the leg present on the other side of the gorilla’s body.
Step 6 – Sketch the Ears
We have completed the bottom part of the gorilla’s body. So, we are going to focus on the upper part now.
In this step, we need to sketch the ears of our gorilla. So, draw small triangular shapes on either side of the gorilla’s head. It should be on the upper part of it.
Step 7 – Add Facial Details
Now, we need to sketch the area where we have to add the facial details of gorillas. To do this, draw a heart shape inside the head of this animal.
Make sure it follows the natural shape of the head as shown in our reference picture. It should curve slightly inward from the fur area. Moreover, its size should be proportional to the size of the head.
Step 8 – Sketch Facial Features
In the last step, we have to draw some facial features of the gorilla: its eyes, nose, and lips. We will begin this step with the eyes.
So, draw two small dark circles on the top of the heart-shaped area. Beneath it, draw two small curved lines to represent the nostrils of this animal.
Lastly, draw a highly curved shape to represent a big smile on its face.
That’s it! Your cartoon gorilla drawing is complete. If it is a pencil sketch, you may want to add some amazing colors to it.
Step 9 – Coloring Your Pencil Sketch Gorilla Drawing
It is time to make your gorilla come to life with a dash of vibrant colors. Make your drawing beautiful with some amazing and illustrative gorilla colors.
Realistically, gorillas have black or grey body colors. Its fur coat ranges from black or grey to red and brown. You can stick to these colors for having a realistic gorilla sketch. Otherwise, you can experiment with different colors, too, for an illustrative or unrealistic look.
Pin it now, Draw later!
How to Draw a Gorilla Drawing Tips
You can enhance your gorilla drawing by making a few changes to it. These changes will give a professional look to your gorilla cartoon drawing.
For example, you can add a jungle in the background of this animal as the forest is its natural habitat.
Moreover, gorillas move in groups. So, creating a bunch of gorillas in different poses and colors together can also be a good option.
