How to Draw a Popcorn

Hello and welcome to another 10-step tutorial! Today, we’re going to have a food-themed project: how to draw popcorn!

Popcorn is a yummy treat often eaten at movie theaters and fairs. Have you ever seen old-fashioned popcorn carts on wheels at carnivals? They are really cool, and sometimes you’ll still see them around.

Did you know that popcorn is possibly over 5000 years old? That’s pretty old! The first commercial popcorn machine, however, wasn’t invented until 1885. Popcorn is normally served with a lot of butter, but you can leave that off for a bit of a lighter and healthier snack. You also might know it as a holiday Christmas tree decoration if you live in North America!

Also, one more fact before we get started: of course “pop” is in the name, but did you ever know why popcorn actually pops when it’s being cooked? It’s because kernels have some water in them, and when they are heated up, this causes the kernels to explode!

With all that said, let’s get to drawing. Get some materials and let’s go!

How to Draw a Popcorn — Let’s get started!

Step 1 – Start drawing the popcorn carton.

Oftentimes, popcorn is served in pretty striped containers, so ours will be too!

Near the bottom of the page, draw a horizontal line. On either end, draw a line going upwards and slanting slightly out. Leave some space above on the page to draw the actual popcorn!

Step 2  – Continue drawing the carton.

Connect the two lines with a scalloped line. This is the upper edge of the carton. This completes the outline of the carton. Good job!

Step 3 – Start drawing the popcorn.

Of course our carton has to be full of yummy popcorn. Each popcorn is going to be a puffy little circle, almost like a tiny cloud.

Right above the upper edge of the carton we just drew, draw a bunch of these little puffy popcorns! We’re going to continue adding more in the next step.

Step 4  – Keep adding popcorn!

The more the merrier. Let’s keep adding popcorn! Above the ones you just drew, add more little pieces. They should be a bit less visible to show perspective. Refer to the photo to see what we mean!

Step 5 – Add more popcorn!

Let’s keep adding popcorn! Repeat the last step to keep building the pile of popcorn higher!

Each row of popcorn should be a little bit shorter, so all the pieces don’t fall out. Did you know that once the kernels are popped, they can be about three times as big as they were before?

Step 6 – Add the final popcorns.

Did you already guess this next step? You got it—add more popcorn! Draw five more tiny circles at the top. Now we have plenty of popcorn to eat! After all, you can just have one piece of popcorn.

Step 7 – Add eyes to the carton!

We’re going to add some personality to our popcorn carton for fun. Let’s add a face! Draw two eyes in the middle of the carton. Do this by drawing a small circle with a slightly smaller one inside. Make sure to add some eyelashes!

Step 8 – Add a big smile.

Let’s add a smile to complete the face. Draw a semicircle centered just below the eyes! It should be a big happy smile.

Step 9 – Add a striped pattern.

Like we mentioned, popcorn is traditionally served in a striped container. So, add stripes to yours! Draw vertical lines spaced evenly apart on the carton. You’re almost done with this tutorial—just one more fun step.

Step 10 – Color in your creation!

Oftentimes, these containers are red and white, but color in your drawing however you want. Don’t forget to fill in the background, too!
