Hello, and welcome to another tutorial by Emily Drawing! Today’s tutorial is all about drawing the rhino! We’ll go through nine easy steps to draw this big animal.
Baby rhinos are known as calves, and their weight varies per species. One example is the Greater One-Horned Rhino, which weighs 80 to 125 pounds. On the other hand, the White Rhino weighs about 110 pounds at birth.
As an adult, the Greater One-Horned Rhino stands at 5.75–6.5 feet tall and weighs about 4,000 to 6,000 pounds. It’s the largest rhino species. Meanwhile, the White Rhino is the largest African rhino species, and it stands at 5 to 6 feet tall and weighs around 3,080 to 7,920 pounds.
It’s time to get started on the tutorial for drawing a rhino. Grab your colored pencils or markers, and learn how to draw this hoofed mammal.

How to Draw a Rhino — Let’s get started!
Step 1 – Draw The Rhino’s Head
You’ll start by drawing the rhino’s head. On paper, it looks like an odd shape, but it’s easy to follow when looking at the picture. It’s mostly a round shape that curves outward, inward, and outward again.
Step 2 – Draw The Rhino’s Front End
The second step is to draw the rhino’s front side, which includes its chest, front leg, and belly. Keep in mind that this is a side view of the rhino, so some legs will be more visible than others. Speaking of legs, rhinos have short, stumpy legs with three toes on each foot. Under the toes is a soft pad, which supports their weight.
Step 3 – Draw The Rhino’s Back End
Next, you’ll draw the rhino’s back end, which includes a back leg and backside, curving up to the back. You need to leave a space open close to the top of the rhino’s head, but you can connect the rest of the body.
Step 4 – Draw The Rhino’s Other Legs
Once again, this is a side view of the rhino, so you won’t draw the full legs. These legs should be mostly hidden behind the chest, belly, and the previously-drawn legs.
Step 5 – Draw The Rhino’s Ears
Remember the space you left over at the top of the rhino’s head? You’re going to draw a cone-shaped ear in that space, as well as a line to show the inner ear. Then, you’ll draw the ear on the other side of the head, but without the line because it’s the back of the ear. Rhinos hear at lower frequencies than humans, with sounds twice as loud to them. Additionally, they can swivel their ears to identify sounds from various directions.
Step 6 – Draw The Rhino’s Horn
Now, you’ll draw the horn on the rhino’s nose. Did you know that a rhino’s horn is made of keratin? Yes, this is the same protein that makes up a human’s hair and fingernails.
Step 7 – Draw The Rhino’s Tail
The next step is to draw the rhino’s tail, which is a shape that curves downward. It almost looks like a paintbrush on the end of the tail. Fun fact: Rhinos use their tails for balance and communication.
Step 8 – Draw The Rhino’s Face
Lastly, you’ll add the rhino’s face. Start with a dot for the eye, and then draw half a smile for the mouth. Just like with other tutorials, we wanted to create a friendly face to appeal to all ages.
Step 9 – Color In Your Drawing!
It’s time for the most fun step of all: coloring your rhino drawing! Our rhino’s body is light gray, and the end of the tail is dark gray. We chose a pale yellow shade for the horn and pink for the inner ear. The rest of the details, such as the eye and smile, are black. It’s also important to color the background, so you can create a scene such as the zoo or their habitat in Asia.

Interesting Facts About The Rhino
Rhinos are from Africa, Asia, Borneo, and the Eastern Himalayas. Their habitats include savannas, deserts, shrublands, tropical moist forests, and tropical and subtropical grasslands.
Unfortunately, the IUCN Red List has classified the Indian Rhino as vulnerable, the White Rhino as near threatened, and the Black, Javan, and Sumatran rhinos as critically endangered. Therefore, the protection of the rhino is very important.
Did You Know?
- There are five species of rhinos, which are the Black Rhino, White Rhino, Sumatran Rhino, Javan Rhino, and Indian Rhino.
- All rhino species have a lengthy gestation period. Mother rhinos are pregnant for 15 to 16 months before giving birth to one calf.
- Rhinos are herbivores, and their diet consists of plant matter such as grass, leaves, shoots, and buds, as well as berries and fruits.
- The average lifespan of a rhino varies per species, but they usually live up to 35 to 50 years. The oldest rhino on record is Fausta, an Eastern Black Rhino in Tanzania. She was considered the oldest rhino when she passed away in 2019 at 57 years old.
- Rhinos have poor vision, and they cannot see more than 30 meters away. Instead, this mammal relies on their sense of smell and hearing.
