How to Draw a Swordfish — Let’s get started!
Step 1 – Sketch the Base of the Swordfish’s Body
Just like other marine animals, we have to create the base of the body in the first step. Our whole drawing will revolve around this step so make sure to do it carefully.
Here, draw a horizontal elongated oval shape in the center of the page. You should make sure that both ends are slightly pointed. It should resemble a leaf or a rugby ball.
The back side of the fish should be close while the front size must have a small gap.
Step 2 – Sketch the Sword
It is time to sketch the signature “sword” or beak of the fish. It is an essential aspect of this fish as it allows it to hunt its prey.
To draw this, put your pencil or pen at the front of the oval, on the opening you left. Here, draw a thin triangular shape in a forward direction that has a narrow tip.
Make sure to keep it as long as the oval of the body.
Step 3 – Draw the Dorsal Fin
Just like the sword, the dorsal fin is another crucial part of the Swordfish. It helps it stabilize and move the body in the water. In this marine animal, it is present on the top side of the body.
You have to sketch a large curved triangle on the top of the body, near the front. It should curve smoothly upward and then point back down toward the body.
Step 4 – Add the Pectoral Fin
It is time to sketch the pectoral fin. It is a small rear fin that is highly pointed. To draw this, you have to put your pencil on the bottom of the oval, near the center.
Now, draw a small and narrower triangle pointing backward as shown in our picture. Make sure it curves slightly to give a natural fish’s fin look.
This fin should be narrower and shorter than the dorsal fin.
Step 5 – Add the Anal Fin
Swordfish have a small pointed anal fin at the rear of the body, near the tail. In the drawing, we have to give the illusion that it is on the other side of the body to give our art a three-dimensional look.
For this, sketch a small pointed triangle that is facing in an upward direction.
Step 6 – Sketch the Swordfish’s Tail
Now, it is time to sketch the Swordfish’s tail. For this, you have to put the pencil at the end point of the oval-shaped body.
Draw a crescent that is facing outward and aligning with the streamlined body. The curves of the crescent should be pointing slightly upward and downward.
Step 7 – Add the Body Details
It is time to add some details to the Swordfish’s body to make it more refined. For this, draw a small curved line at the front of the body. It should start from the middle of the oval and touch its bottom. This makes the base of the face known as the gill line.
Now, draw a slightly curved horizontal line starting from the recently drawn curved line. It should end at the tail.
Note: Make sure that this line follows the natural curve of the Swordfish’s body.
Step 8 – Sketch the Swordfish’s Face
Finally, it is time to sketch the face details of this fish. For this, you need to draw a small dark circle near the sword to indicate the eye.
Beneath the eye, add a small curved line. This should indicate the smile of the fish.
That’s it! Your realistic Swordfish drawing is complete.
Step 9 – Coloring Your Swordfish Pencil Drawing
Swordfish have a variety of colors as their different species are of various hues. However, the common pattern of each species is a dark color above and a lighter shade below. Fins are also of dark colors.
The most common colors for the top in the Swordfish are purple, dark blue, black, dull leaden blue, and blackish-brown color. The bottom of it can be of these colors: white, silver, metallic sheen, ivory, light orange, and light pink.
If your kids want to give the drawing a cartoony look, you can experiment with different colors and shades too.
